What mods did you do or have you done to increase power with spending minimum green $$?

1) Bypassing coolant from going through throttle body (debatable but every little bit helps)
2) Red line water wetter to help lower coolant temps
3) Removing restricter plate behind throttle body on some cars esp. 00-01 maximas
4) Having cats removed and replaced with straight pipes
5) Gapping plugs tighter on boosted cars, and looser on NA cars. (up for discussion)
6) DIY grounding kit
7) Fill your frame rails with structural foam for a stiffer chassis which lets you lay down traction better
8) Remove abs and use a honda proportioning valve (-62 lbs + better brakes)
9) Intake/high performance air filter
10) 300zx TT fuel filter instead of smaller fuel filter (said to flow better)
11) Cut about 2 inches off stock shifter and replace knob with a universal one (debatable but works)
12) Battery relocation (better weight distribution)
13) Fan override switch (to leave them on at the track, less heatsoak)
14) EGR Blockoff (engine runs cleaner)
15) Header/Exhaust wrap
16) Lower temp/cut spring thermostat
17) Index your spark plugs (make sure they're all pointing the same way)
18) 16v laptop voltage amplifier for your coils (hotter spark)
19) Drop resistor mod for auto trans
20) Y pipe (Best bang for the buck)
21) Cut down EGR guide tube
22) Home depot oil catch can
23) Weight reduction (remove all unnecessary things from the car)
24) Removing vias set up and covering with a plate on VQ35DE
25) SSIM mod on VQ35DE

What else can be done on the budget to make power?

yo its ok

DIY grounding kit

fill your frame rails with structural foam for a stiffer chassis which lets you lay down traction better

remove abs and use a honda proportioning valve (-62 lbs + better brakes)

I missed the most popular one, intake/high performance air filter

and

300zx TT fuel filter opposed to smaller one

cut about 2inches off stock shifter, kinda hondaboy thing to do but hey it helps a little (debatable)

yo its ok

remember 5th gens dont have fuel filters they are in tank.

Sorry, but lulz at cutting the OEM shifter. If you're going to put that then you should also put cutting OEM springs.

That's what short shifters are for. B&M costs about $200.

battery relocation (better weight distribution)
Fan override switch (to leave them on at the track, less heatsoak)
EGR Blockoff (engine runs cleaner, although intake temps are a bit hotter)
Header/Exhaust wrap
Lower temp/cut spring thermostat
Index your spark plugs (make sure they're all pointing the same way)
16v laptop voltage amplifier for your coils (hotter spark)

For maximas specifically:
drop resistor mod for auto trans
Y pipe (Best bang for the buck)

lol, $20 is better than $200 when cash is tight

+1 on the indexed spark plugs, I never even thought of that
Whats the easiest way to make sure they're indexed? Draw an arrow on the top?

Yes, basically draw a line with a sharpie on your ratchet and spark plug and make sure they all face the same way. It's good for 1 or 2 free hp, i've heard.

Everyone says y-pipe is the best bang for the buck, but how much buck are we talking and how much power?

30whp in the mid range, you can find one used for about 100-150. New for 150-200. Easy to install, too.

30 damn, like i would like to do something to give me a lil more power, would you know how much shops charge to install y-pipes. See i have a muffler (magnaflow) and maybe i was thinking of getting a y-pipe too, would my car be loud i actually havent gotten the muffler installed yet.

how is this done!

remove throttle body, and take the black plate out and replace TB

another free mod is cutting down the EGR guide tube

how does one take out the tb and cut down the egr?

how does one take out the tb and cut down the egr?

cutting down the EGR guide tube is a little more involved but you take off the TB by unscrewing the 4 bolts that hold it onto the intake manifold. Then pull it apart and slip the plate behind it out and replace the TB and gasket and bolts.

^^what does that plate do?

SecondToNone317
01-01-2009, 01:40 PM
from the looks of it, it is supposed to guide the air over the EGR guide tube but its a poor design and the edges of the plate can actually get in the way of flowing air

I guess we can add the home depot oil catch can to this list. It will help keep the IM free of oil blowby hence keeping it cleaner and better flowing.

EGR Blockoff (engine runs cleaner, although intake temps are a bit hotter) Quote bishnu

bishnu the intake temps will be alittle cooler cause the erg is used to re-introduce exhaust gas into intake... to reduce spark knock, misfire and detonation.. at higher rpms ... so the engine will run cleaner but intake temps will be lower/cooler...

i heard of the foam. i know people have been doing this for years. normally they put in in othr parts of the car to stiffen the chassis for track racing.

what foam do they use and where can i get some? i want to put it up front for some needed traction.

I lol'd at cutting the stock shifter because it's not going to do you anything besides a lower shift knob. The throw will still be the same. To make an EFFECTIVE ghetto short shifter, you need to relocate the ball on the shift rod a bit lower. This will change the throw and it will be slightly reduced compared to stock.

OR..you could get the "NISMO" short shifter on ebay for under $20 if you're really on a budget.

I put intake temps instead of what it should have been, combustion temps.

EGR keeps combustion temps down by richening an otherwise very lean mix. If you delete EGR, you're increasing combustion temps. The engine does run a bit cleaner though.

higher than normal tire pressure ---> decreased rolling resistance........ debateable as it lowers traction.
always keepin the gas tank 1/2 empty.
synthetic oil change and fuel system cleaner every 3k, or a sea foam treatment if never done before.
cleaning parts earlier than recommended (air filter, TB, MAF IACV)
running highest octane offered at stations

if you're turbo, you can put a spring on your wastegate to give you an extra pound or two of boost, and help keep it from bleeding off at higher rpms.
